This is what no one has thought about before experienced a sleepless night for the new born little lovely beloved, who just entered the life and home, and now in the Sleeps. But 1 day or 2 days are enough, then it makes trouble as a sleepless body and a sleepless mind is a liability, and no one likes a liability.
Well, may be some unmarried or couples expecting their first baby, will argue me but surely the parents will agree to me. Now what? Now comes the research work or advice work.
In old days when we have old peoples in our home, they would have told us a lot of tricks and tips of make our new born have a good deep sleep, now most of us are alone and now comes internet and articles with such advices.
Growing a child is not a part time or automatic job, it is a hectic and full time job, and mothers are so much respected and important because they do this job for nothing as remuneration. The day your baby will grow up and succeed in the life will be your reward and you will be proud to do all the efforts to make it succeed, so thumb up and thanks to my mother, and all mothers.
This article will cover most of the tricks and tips to help you out to make the new baby sleep well and happily, and the parents too. But remember that it depends on genes, so please ask the grand-parents of the baby [both maternal and paternal] about every method before applying it, as which method worked better for the parents in their cradle nights.
Tips to Make Baby Sleep
In first four to five months, every newborn, feels as if it is falling down, and this make him frighten, surprise, shock or alarm and this may be harmful for the new born and painful for the parents. To avoid this, you may use some cotton piece, towel, or may be a baby comforter, or there are a lot of baby swaddle products available in market to cover your cute one.
One thing you will notice that in 3 to 4.5 months, the baby will immediately take its hands out of the swathe, and then you have to wrap it without hands.
From the first day, remember that you have to wrap it tight but gently. Finally, one day it will not let you wrap it or just after you finished wrapping it will unwrap itself. That will be the end of swathe.
Before you go to bed, pick your baby gently, without too much stimulation, with lights at the lowest, so you can manage to see around, put her mouth on your breast.
You will know that naturally babies start sucking as soon as they are at nipples, let them feed until they move out. Make sure they do not wake up.
But as written earlier, all the tips and tricks may have an adverse effect. As every gene has a different way to react to every action. So better first discuss with your parents before doing something to your child. Ask them if it worked for you or not, most likely the trick which will work on you will work for your child too. Now both of you, mother and father have genetic impact of the new born so ask about both.
You can start dream feed on any day you want and continue it as long as it is working fine for your baby.
The dad of the baby can help you in this if you give him a bottle of formula milk, pumped breast milk, or regular milk, and he put this bottle in baby’s mouth and let you have a sleep, before the baby wakes up. These split feeds are helpful for mothers.
LDNL – Limit Day Nap Length
Whatever you do in night, will go useless if you are too busy in the day and can’t give time to your little loved one, and let it sleep for long, continuous, uninterrupted spells. Keep in mind that a new born requires approximately, 20 hours to sleep, and a smaller tummy requires to wake up repeatedly for feeds. Now understanding this, in the day time, wake your baby up after 2 to 2.25 hours and breastfeed well, then spend some 20 odd minutes with it, talking, smiling and playing with it. Check diapers, refresh if required, then let it sleep again for 2 to 2.25 hours, means in the day time out of 12 hours the baby will sleep for 8 to 9 hours, so in the night out of 12 hours, 11 odd hours will be required to sleep.
In night you can breastfeed after 4 hours and if you split feeds then both of you can feed once in a night. And have deep sleep, with the child also.
As the child grow up the sleep time will lesser down and you should adjust that accordingly, you can say 1 hour to decrease in every 3 months, here you must be careful enough to decrease that hour from day time, not from night time. Once you get control on it, you will have even relaxed nights.
EWS – Eat, Wake, Sleep
Always remember to feed your child as soon as it wakes up. Allow it to feed as much as it wants, and you must be sure that it is getting the feed out of your breast, means incase if it leaves your breast early, please must check if your breasts are full of milk or not, may you need a lactation consultant to sort this out! If the cute one sleeps during a feed, change its diaper, tap its feet, wake it up and play with it. Help it Burp, use your hand as a cup and tap its back. Talk to your child at-least 5 – 10 minutes, and then leave it with some toys or some activity in the cradle.
Feed may never be taken as a sleep prop, feed should be considered as an activity prop.
Try to never allow it to sleep immediately after feed. Dream feeds are exceptions but only those are, not all feeds.
LLV – Lights Lowest but Visible
From the day one you should maintain the low lights while the baby is sleeping but those light should be enough for you to see around. Don’t habitat your baby to sleep in a complete dark environment as it is will be a continuous problem in future, As, then your baby will never tolerate very little light and wake up as soon as there will be light.

Also, this will help you to dream feed or diaper change in the midnight (if required) without any change in the environment.
Lower the Fan / Use White Noise.
Many new parents put their new born right in front of a full speed fan, blowing a wind onto the baby, and it is problematic for the baby. So make sure to lower down the speed of fan to make a deep silent breeze for the baby. Now there are times when we have some guest at our home, or we may have to travel somewhere and can’t leave the baby behind, now what? Should we ruin the routine of our baby which we have developed in weeks with so much hard work and efforts? No, not at all, we may use White Noise to avoid other noises disturbing the baby and let him to be prompt to its routine. And this discipline will surely help it for the endeavors of coming life.
Routine / Pre – Nap Schedule
For longer night sleeps, create some routines that will develop the mindset of your child to sleep long and quite in the night. As naturally a child accepts reiteration as a system to follow. There may be a lot of things like:
- Taking baby to its room.
- Closing the blinds / curtains.
- Lowering down the Fan speed.
- Placing the White Noise Machine at a suitable place.
- Diaper change.
- Night bath.
- Lotion / Oil Massage.
- Feeding [if baby needs, remember EWS, and Dreamfeed].
- Night dresses / Pajamas.
- Hugs and Kisses
- Placing the baby in sleep sack / cradle / wearable blanket.
- Singing Lullabies or playing it on some tab / pc etc. remember to lower down the voice gradually, and so soon as the baby is drowsy, stop it. Don’t wait for a complete sleep.
Remember, these are some steps; you may add or discard any of them as per your requirements. The reason of writing and / or print these steps in bullet way is to tell you to please write yours down on a paper with large fonts and make it visible in the baby rooms, both living and sleeping. So, in your absence anyone like your better half, baby’s grandparents, uncles or aunts, baby sitter, who is handling the baby may follow this routine and your effort may not go waste.

Remember one day change is an end of the routine in the early years of a child, so must write down the schedule and make it visible enough, also guide others and make all the necessary stuff available to be found easily.
Diaper Changing Trick
If in the night, you found your baby weeping because of a wet diaper, change it immediately, and as your baby is already awaken enough, don’t think that you can do it fast and quick, relax and try to make it in the least possible stimulations, as your baby seems like awaken, but it is not, it is just weeping or crying, and mentally it may be sleeping, more jerks and movements may wake him up mentally too, so be calm, change the diaper gently and dream feed it, and re-swathe it and put it back in the cradle. Remember, not to change the night environment by switching on lights in baby’s room. [Remember LLV.]
MSMS – The More Baby Sleep the more Baby will Sleep
Remember the MSMS, and don’t try to keep your baby awake in the day thinking that by this you will find him sleep longer in the nights. Let it sleep as much it wants, and don’t for it to awake.
Now, confused, what I said earlier in LDNL, and EWS, I am negating myself here, no dear, it is a matter of understanding. I have not said to limit the daytime naps, I have said to limit the lengths, means after every 2 to 2.25 hours, give some 15 to 30 minutes to your baby, wake it up, feed it, play with it, help it burp and let it sleep again for 2 to 2.25 hours. Don’t allow it to sleep continuously for whole day, give him as much feed as possible in the day time and this way the LDNL and EWS are completed and the nights will be easier also. A tired body cannot have a deep easy sleep. Don’t let you baby be tired by waking it up for long durations in day time. I thought to clear my point.
Don’t Panic, Never Rush in
In the night, you heard the cute little weeping, you check gently and found no problem with the pamper, then why is it weeping, don’t panic to feed it, just try to tap it in the back or give it a very soft gentle message on forehead, or try rocking the cradle very gently, or check if it needs to swathe again, or may be to comforter position is causing some discomfort, or may be the breeze is not enough due to the temperature increase, or any other options you may think, then if all fails then try to feed it.

You better write down a checklist for such situations to check the things quickly, but remember no speedy stimulations for the baby, and note this time and if it is the regular time your baby needs feed, change your schedule accordingly.
DENS – Drowsy Enough, not Slept
Remember the Dens, as I have written earlier, that leave your baby drowsy, not completely slept. Means when your efforts reach a point where you see your baby drowsy decrease the efforts slowly and gently and end them in a soothing way, not just a sharp end. This will let your baby finally sleep independently and it will help him in the night with sudden wakening and it may sleep again independently without weeping or crying, as it knew the way to go to sleep from drowsiness, so leave it drowsy always
Be there if from the drowsy state it comes back to waken up again, but if it sleeps down, don’t kiss or hug in the immediate sleep, as it may disturb the mind sleeping state and you may have to repeat all the activities to make your baby sleep again.
Always keep some blanket of a soft piece of cloth around your baby and avoid him to see you, as whenever it will see you, it will want your touch and, in the effort, to be with you it may wake up again. So, always block its vision to avoid seeing you.
KYB – Know Your Baby
All what is written is based on the research and studies of past, and your baby is a new being on this earth and it may be a bit different from others, so, don’t worry if written techniques not working. Write down which activity of yours caused what and know your baby, as mentioned earlier that grandparents [both maternal and paternal] may advice worthwhile telling about the parents’ childhood, and it may help you a lot, but may it will also not work and you baby prove itself to be a completely different human being so your written steps will help you know your baby and act accordingly.
Maintain the temperature of Cradle.
As we know that human temperature is different than of a cradle, so keep a slight warm water bottle in the cradle, or baby bed, and remove it before you put your baby in it. This will make your baby feel that it is still in the hands of parent, and don’t alarm it to get back to its parent. But do this only if it gets alarmed while putting in the cradle. As I have written earlier, all the written tricks are not to be applied compulsory. Keep them in your mind and apply whatever is necessary, an instinct developed naturally of an individual is far much better then such controlled conditions.
DOF – Day on Floor
|Infants (4 to 12 Months Old)||14 – 16 Hours|
|Toddlers (1 to 3 Years Old)||13 – 15 Hours|
Let your baby sleep on floor in the day naps, of-course within little bedding, and also the floor must be very much clean and no pets or toddlers around. This will help creating the mind of your baby that in cradle it may sleep longer and out of cradle, Mom will wake him again and again, so night environment will be more effective. Also remember that in the night your baby should sleep in the same room with you for first 2 years. Surely, you must have a separate cradle first and then a baby bed. So in the day time keep your baby in front of your eyes, so setup a specific place around your working area and keep it ready for the baby, so you can notice all its activities, and maintain the limits of day naps.

Things to Remember
Also remember the ideal sleep times for the child and don’t worry incase of some variance of 60 to 90 minutes, but more than this should be discussed with some Certified Child Sleep Consultant.

Wholly, a sleep schedule and its important tips can only give you a direction to pursue, these are just probabilities to give you help you understand your baby’s tendency. All of them are not applicable and all of them are not even pointless. Like: Sometimes, a baby needs to swaddle and sometimes not. It relies upon the nature and mood of the baby. Keep these guidelines in mind and consider them while mitigating your baby to sleep in a better manner. Ultimately, there will be a Win Win situation, in case you don’t lose courage and persistence.
